What is Satsang?

The word satsang is a Sanskrit term that could be translated as “an encounter with the Truth” (sat means truth and sang means encounter). It is a traditional practice of Hinduism, which consists of being in the presence of an enlightened being in order to receive teachings and blessings. In practice, satsang is a lecture with questions and answers, and accompanied by music. This is the main form of work Prem Baba uses, as it also serves as an opportunity to unite the sangha, the spiritual community, through chanting and collective practice. In the first part of satsangs participants play and sing bhajans, devotional chants that help prepare the field for the transmission. Prem Baba works through darshan (an energy transmission that comes from the master’s eyes), silence, and through what he calls “good conversations”: by feeling the energy of the moment, he talks about a wide variety of themes that emerge, often in response to questions asked by the spiritual seekers in attendance. Satsangs often finish as a big celebration, as the musicians go back to playing high-energy chants that help people integrate the experience. When time allows for it, Prem Baba receives those who feel the desire to go up to him to do pranam, a gesture of reverence that allows the seeker to receive the guru’s shakti energy.

Who is Prem Baba?

422401_189184174528835_1006009624_nSri Prem Baba is a humanitarian and spiritual master teacher of the ancient Sachcha lineage. He is at service of bringing world transformation and peace through love and compassion, by re-establishing human, social and spiritual values. He was born in Brazil, where he spends a few months of the year and has built the Sachcha Mission Ashram (in Nazaré Paulista, in the state of São Paulo). He spends a few months of the year at Sachcha Dham Ashram in Rishikesh, India, and spends the rest of his time traveling the world to visit various centers that are developing focused on his teachings. Sri Prem Baba’s work is to build bridges – between East and West, science and religion, psychology and spirituality, as well as between various forms of spiritual knowledge – with the goal of creating union. For this, he developed a method of self-discovery called the Path of the Heart, which comprises of a host of tools, but is primarily based on jnana yoga, the path of self-discovery, bhakti yoga, the path of devotion, and karma yoga, the path of selfless service. The path begins with the purification and transformation of the personality, which happens through self-investigation and by identifying the conditioning that causes negative repetitions. One de-conditions the mind and de-identifies oneself from the images that cause destructivity, a process which ultimately allows one to sustain ecstasy and awaken one’s higher consciousness. Sri Prem Baba works towards helping us become channels of divine love by manifesting our gifts and talents. By giving the presents we brought with us to the world, we fulfill our dharma, our life’s purpose, which in essence is surrender to God and universal charity.

PREM-BABASri Prem Baba founded the Better World Institute in Brazil, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote holistic education, with the larger goal of bringing long-term, lasting change in society. The Better World Institute has been focusing on mediating conflicts in various communities since 2010, and is now developing a project for bringing a culture of peace and prosperity to an economic system that has been fueled largely by the fear of scarcity, which allows for misery and poverty to run rampant. This project aims at building the foundations upon which a paradigm shift can occur, from an economy based on fear to an economy founded on love, cooperation, trust and the understanding that everyone can be prosperous together. In Prem Baba’s view the culture of peace is intimately linked to prosperity, not in the sense of having wealth, but rather in having all one’s needs met without resorting to competition and conflict. To aid in reshaping our cultural and social values, the Better World Institute is implementing the culture of peace and prosperity in schools through a far-reaching educational program in Brazil. Through a teacher-training program that encompasses many municipalities, a new educational model is being established that will help children move beyond the conditioning instilled by existing social patterns.

Sri Prem Baba is also supporting different social projects, such as the movement Ganga Action Parivar, founded by the respected Pujya Swami Chidananda ji (of Parmarth Niketan). As soon as they met each other, Sri Prem Baba and Pujya Swami ji immediately united, for they saw they shared the same aspirations. Both had already been working towards protecting and preserving the Ganges River, especially by finding solutions to the trash and sewage problems, with the overarching goal of making the journey of spiritual pilgrims to sacred places an easier experience. With that in mind, Sri Prem Baba ji and Pujya Swami ji had the initiative of creating a “Global Sangam for Environmental Preservation and World Peace,” taking place at the Kumbh Mela in 2013. Conte-algo-que-nao-seiThis joint camp faces the sacred sangam and is a five-minute walk from the Sachcha Ashram in Allahabad. The initiative is being called “Together 2013” for short, for it gathers spiritual seekers from all parts of the world who also support this same cause of finding green solutions and initiatives that can be shared and disseminated throughout India, and eventually throughout the world. At the moment, the primary focus of the effort is to bring purification and cleanliness to the banks of the sacred Mother Ganga. The union of these two forces, Ganga Action Parivar and the Path of the Heart, allows for the caring of the internal and external ecosystems in a well-balanced way, through a combination of karma yoga and bhakti yoga, action and devotion. Prem Baba believes that only by breaking down the barriers of separation can we bring about the Parivartan, the great planetary transformation, and fulfill the sankalpa of the Sachcha lineage, which aims at transforming suffering into joy.

“All is one. Some people see me performing certain Vedic rituals, and believe that I am a Hindu; others see me singing songs from a Christian tradition and think that I am a Christian; one may see me chanting Buddhist mantras and conclude that I must be Buddhist… But I am not Hindu, or Christian or Buddhist; and at the same time, I am everything. I am truth. I take the essence – only what is true – from every tradition.”

“Love is my religion.”
